Community-driven strategies to prevent FGM/C – a review of best practices

A review of community-driven strategies to prevent FGM/C in the African context supports ISF and its implementing partners in piloting and developing new strategies to eradicate FGM/C.

A review of community-driven strategies to prevent Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in the African context has been published. It briefly presents the theoretical frameworks and ISF’s work to prevent FGM/C. Community-based, locally led initiatives to eradicate FGM/C are discussed.

The review discusses different approaches to community mobilization such as replacing FGM/C with an alternative rite of passage and mainstreaming FGM/C prevention into community development. In raising awareness and advocating against FGM/C review illuminates the roles of different “messengers” or “change agents” as well. These are, for example, empowering women and girls into role models and activists as well as engaging fathers, brothers and husbands.

The review supports ISF and its implementing partners in piloting and developing new strategies to eradicate FGM/C. We hope that other actors involved in ending FGM/C also find it useful.
