International Solidarity Foundations’ (ISF) Finance and Administration Coordinator Abdirahman Ismael Omer believes progress is possible even amid adversity. All it takes is determination and collaboration.
“I tragically lost both of my parents early in life. This taught me the importance of self-confidence and community support.”
So says Abdirahman Ismael Omer, Finance and Administration Coordinator at ISF. Living and working in Hargeisa, Somaliland, Omer is a seasoned humanitarian professional whose life story reflects resilience, the power of education, and an unwavering desire to help others. His journey has taken him from childhood challenges in Somaliland to international work benefiting East African communities.
“Despite the challenges of the Somali civil war in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I pushed forward with determination. As a young refugee in Ethiopia, I gained invaluable survival skills – lessons in perseverance, adaptability, and hope that have stayed with me to this day.”
Growing up in Hargeisa during the 1980s, Omer was determined to get an education despite the hardships his community faced. He completed his primary and secondary schooling in Somaliland, and his thirst for knowledge led him to a technical university and later to a master’s degree at the University of Hargeisa.
“To me, Hargeisa is more than just a city – it’s home. Whether it’s the glowing sunsets over the Sheikh Mountains, the warmth of Eid celebrations, or the tireless optimism of the city’s youth, no place compares. Even if Somaliland doesn’t appear on every map, its heartbeat is undeniable,” he says.
Since beginning his career in the early 2000s, Omer has worked with several national and international humanitarian organizations. In his current role at ISF, he supports projects related to livelihoods and gender-based violence by closely collaborating with local partners to strengthen their expertise and reporting capabilities.
Omer is motivated by the daily opportunity to support vulnerable communities – to stand with them and contribute to meaningful change. Whether it’s ensuring efficient operations or empowering individuals through sustainable solutions, he believes in the power of solidarity to transform lives.
“Helping others has always been a core part of my identity,” Omer explains. “I am deeply committed to supporting marginalized and vulnerable communities while ensuring they have the necessary resources and opportunities to succeed. My work with ISF’ local partners reflects this passion – whether it’s in financial management, education, or empowering grassroots initiatives.”
In the future, Omer aims to continue making an impact by expanding humanitarian efforts, mentoring young professionals, and promoting sustainable development both within and beyond Somaliland. “My journey has taught me that progress is possible even in the face of adversity – with determination and collective effort,” he concludes.
