The Time for Changing Gender Norms is Now

Reading time: 3 min

A groundbreaking training held in Kisii, Kenya, set the stage for advancing gender equality. This intensive three-day program brought together professionals dedicated to dismantling deeply rooted gender roles and engaging men in the promotion of women’s rights. The training emphasized that men’s active participation is essential for creating sustainable change.

Workshops Turning Men into Allies and Agents of Change

For years, International Solidarity Foundation’s (ISF) partner organizations – CECOME, Manga Heart, and Nyamira North Women Sacco – have been at the forefront of combating gender-based violence. Their workshops address issues such as masculinity, power dynamics, and challenges like female genital mutilation. The latest training gathered 25 experienced professionals who work to enhance women’s economic independence and prevent gender-based violence.

“It’s time to change our approach. We can’t focus solely on women and girls – we need men as allies and agents of change,” emphasizes communications coordinator Damaris Simu from the ISF. “We now have a clearer vision of what to aim for and how to act to make meaningful change happen.”

Toward a More Equitable Future

Anonymous stories and open discussions in the workshops have fostered empathy and understanding. Participants explored themes such as responsible fatherhood and the role of men in preventing gender-based violence. This work is laying the groundwork for a culture where men are no longer passive bystanders but active advocates for equality.

Keys to Economic Independence

In Kisii, agriculture dominates the local economy, but land ownership remains predominantly in the hands of men. This disparity reinforces women’s economic dependence and perpetuates gender inequality. ISF’s livelihood programs aim to disrupt this structure and promote fairer distribution of resources.

When women are given the opportunity to own land and build their livelihoods, a pathway to greater independence and equality opens. Dismantling gender roles is a long-term effort, but every step brings us closer to sustainable change – both for individuals and communities.
